The state-ranked Lady Hawks basketball team did it again.
After defeating Mabank 56-48 in the Area round, they’ll face Frisco Panther Creek Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Greenville in the regional semifinals.
The 19-16 Panthers were the runners-up in their district but defeated Godley Friday night in their Area game, leading 24-17 at halftime on their way to a win.
“I think our kids have bought into
our process and kind of how we do
things,” Coach Deanna Doles said.
“It started in the off-season, and then
through the summer. We just had kids
who decided they wanted to get PG
girls basketball back.”
And the Lady Hawks have brought
it back strong.
“We’ve been putting up over
60 points a game, which in girls
basketball, that is a lot. We have
a variety of kids that can score. I
think we’ve had some double digit
scoring, but then you look down and
everybody has scored, but we can
also guard the ball too, so I think it’s a
mixture of both.”
The culture change also benefited
from the Lady Hawks’ experienced
starters, which includes seven
returning varsity players from last
year. Two JV players moved up and
they added a freshman.
“We’re just a year older too, you
know,” Coach Doles said. “So it’s
really kind of the same core group
that we had last year. But I just think
it’s been them deciding to put in the
work, and then being a year older and knowing what it takes.”
