For theatre students, there are two parts to a show. The first part: read-through, memorizing, blocking, and research.
The second part: rehearsals, adding set pieces, travelling, and performing.
Theatre students are all in the first part with their respected plays, but the JV group is doing something new this year; competing.
On April 11, the Bravo company is set to compete their class play, Murder on the Orient Express, in Houston. Unlike One Act Play, this competition has fewer rules and regulations, adding another opportunity for the students to showcase their work.
“It’s good that they’re giving us a chance to compete without all of the strict rules and give us freedom and creativity,” sophomore Gianna Romero said. “I have not done a UIL-like competition since my eighth grade year, and I think that it will prepare our class for when we get into varsity theater.”
In the eyes of Director Lisa Newton, this competition is a great opportunity to get the Bravo company more experience. Though exciting it is also new and unfamiliar to the company.
“There’s so few opportunities for students to compete outside of OAP, our varsity level group,” Mrs. Newton said. “I think this is a fantastic opportunity for our people in Bravo, to get some more experience not only acting, but also traveling with a set and really getting used to performing in front of people.”
Just like Mrs. Newton, senior student director Emma Sharp is excited that the JV company will have a chance to compete and that she was chosen to direct a show a second time.
“I’m mainly excited because this is a really good opportunity for JV,” Emma said. “Nobody’s ever had an opportunity like this at our school before.”
