Heaps of candy dumped on the kitchen counter, sacks of Reese’s, gummy bears, Snickers and Nerds. Piles of candy that will slowly dwindle until only a few are left.
And they’ll be left for a long time. They’re the unwanted, unloved treats from trick-or-treating – the Dots and licorice of the candy family.
“I hate those little chocolate balls with wafer centers,” senior James Solomon said. “They’re the worst, but I’d probably still eat them.”
With all sorts of Halloween candy to choose from – everything from fruity, chewy items to chocolate anything – everyone has their favorites and their “bottom of the barrels”. Reese’s ranks first with most students but after that, the list is broad and varied.
“Reese’s are my absolute favorite candy,” sophomore Emmy Budzilowski said. “The Halloween ones are the best because they have the perfect ratio of chocolate and peanut butter. I just love them.”
While some people are die hard chocolate fans, other people prefer the more fruity candies. Gummy bears are loved by many for their gummy texture and wide variety in flavors; they’re the forgotten candy rainbow.
“I love gummy bears because of the texture and how chewy they are,” junior Hannah Dough said. “The strawberry flavor is my favorite, the little green ones, but the others are good too.”
However we can’t forget about the candy that will remain in the bottom of the candy bucket until it’s so old you just have to throw it out, or suck it up and eat it anyway.
“Every time I go trick-or-treating all I freaking get is Dots,” junior Julie Walker said. “And they’re disgusting; they just taste like medicine, and they’re always hard.”
Many people can relate to the hatred of the little colorful medicine gummies along with other classics like Twizzlers and licorice. These are the candies you’re always disappointed to see in the bottom of your bag, and they are the ones that will make it to summer without being touched.
Thankfully there are still so many other options to choose from that aren’t a part of the unwanted candy group.
“I like nerds, I think they’re good. Not the gummy ones, just the regular ones,” freshman Chloe Diaz said. “I like how they’re kind of sour, but sweet at the same time. I also like the crunchy texture.”
Texture can play a big part in deciding whether someone likes a candy or not. Many people don’t necessarily like the crunchy, sticky, or hard consistency added to particular candies. Making them the “bottom tear” candies of the spooky season.
“I’d have to say that Milk Duds are probably my least favorite because they’re annoying,” sophomore Braden Farizer said. “They stick to your teeth, and they’re not even that good, so I don’t get why anyone would like them.”
Given that the caramel on the inside of Milk Duds is not a fan favorite, other caramel covered candies are considered a seasonal delicacy.
“Those green apple suckers covered in caramel are my favorite,” Julie Walker said. “They only come out during Halloween, and usually I don’t like green apple flavored things, but I like those.”
This year’s “last resort” candies will be no different than the last. There will always be a pile of candy that’s left in the early months of summer, begging for their time to shine -the unwanted Dots, Whoppers, and licorice candies will have to wait for that late night, summer time sweet tooth to finally be eaten.
“I usually split my candy into what I like and don’t like,” senior Amiya Edwards said. “The candy that I don’t like, I’ll just give to friends or family instead of letting it go bad.”
