How to: Read Dashboard Lights

The majority of teenagers have no idea what the dashboard lights mean ⸺ even referring to them as “Car Emojis.” But as we start driving, it’s important to know what the lights mean without having to call our parents for help (I’m guilty of this). Keep reading for a guide of what they look like as well as what they mean.

Check engine: Appears when there is a problem regarding the car’s engine. It could be something minor such as a loose wire, or it could be something much more serious. Be sure to get it checked out as soon as possible.

Battery: Appears when the car’s battery is dead or has long-term issues. Usually, the car will not start if this notification appears on the dash.

Coolant temperature: This means your car is running too hot. This can be caused by things like broken water pumps or problems with the radiator. Driving with this light on is not only dangerous but can cause permanent issues to the car.

Oil pressure: Can mean things like a leak in the engine, worn parts, or simply needing the oil topped off. Not getting this checked can also cause long-term vehicle damage down the road.

Tire pressure monitoring: Can mean leakage to a tire or needing to refill or remove air (see previous story for a tutorial on how to fix it) driving with this light on can cause potential tire damage.

Brake system: Relates to problems with the vehicle’s brakes. Once again, this could be no big deal. But having messed up brakes can lead to terrible accidents on the road if not quickly fixed.
