When head volleyball coach Amy Collvins earned her 400th career win last week in a game against DeKalb, only a few people in the gym knew that it happened.
“I didn’t really tell anybody about it until after it was done,” she confessed.
Collvins, who has been at Pleasant Grove for 25 years and a head coach for 15, only started paying attention to the wins recently.
“After Coach Gibson got his 100th win, he told us old people that we needed to keep track of it,” Collvins said. “That’s the only reason I really even knew. I have no idea when I got 200 or 300.”
She attributes those 400 wins to the culture of the district.
“I just think Pleasant Grove kids have an expectation of a high standard, and they know, even in middle school, the standard that we have in volleyball and expectations and traditions,” she said. “That’s what makes my job easy.”
But while those 400 wins are a big deal, she said other things are important, too.
“I just don’t think about wins. I think about how we perform,” Collvins said. “There were losses last year, but I’m proud of them. We got better; we got faster. We showed up against state ranked teams and almost took the win.”
As for the next step, Collvins said her goal is 25 to 35 wins a year, and of course a state championship.
And looking beyond that?
“Let’s go for 500.”
