On May 8, Robert Prevost was announced as the new pope. Taking the name Pope Leo XIV, he is the first pope in history to be born in the United States.
“I think it’s pretty cool that we got an American pope,” senior Owen Braza said. “He’s kind of young too, he’ll probably be around for a while.”
Pope Leo XIV made his first remarks as pope from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, calling for peace and paying tribute to the late Pope Francis. His message conveyed the short phrase, “Peace be with all of you!” as his opening statement.
“I’m glad they took their time with electing the new pope,” senior Lyla Breto said. “Especially since it’s a position he’s going to be in for life.”
The new pope has been very outspoken about certain issues that seem persistent in today’s society. Such as racism, migrants, and Covid. He aligns with Pope Francis’ beliefs in prioritizing the needs of these issues and bringing solutions to light.
“I’m excited to see what Pope Leo XIV has to offer,” Lyla said. “I hope he is a good representation of what American Catholicism looks like. ”
